go. read. now.

i just followed the link for this at feministe not five minutes ago, and i teared up a little.  please go read the whole thing. it is doctors like this man who make life decisions and that by doing so wind up doing good work.  they wind up changing women’s lives forever, in positive ways.

the anti’s would have you believe that abortion providers are butchers and monsters who only want to line their pockets w/ blood money.  i don’t think a single one of them has ever really talked to one, to a man like this who does what he does b/c he actually cares about the women he sees.  he wants women to live.

he understands that most women don’t seek abortion casually, most of them are desperate, in a horrible situation and need one, just one person to listen to them judgment free.  they need someone to tell them that everything is going to be all right, and that this isn’t the end of their life.

the stories he shared about the septic cases he had seen made me cringe. if people would stop to realize, as i have blogged about here b/f and linked to article backing me up, making abortion illegal doesn’t stop abortion.  it kills women.  women who deserve a chance at having a great and full life, and w/ the possibility of having children someday if she chooses to, on her own terms.  it kills women who have the potential to go on to do great things w/ their lives.  it kills women who already have mouths to feed and children to take care of.  making abortion illegal kills.  period.

this article was amazing, and if i could meet this doctor i would shake his hand and thank him for sharing.  it is b/c of the work he does that countless women have a chance at living.i leave you now hoping that you will go read it in it’s entirety, or even just what jill quoted at feministe, and w/ this quote from doctor romalis:

I can take a woman, in the biggest trouble she has ever experienced in her life, and by performing a five-minute operation, in comfort and dignity, I can give her back her life

It is a dangerous thing these doctors and nurses do, and they take their lives in their hands. I have a friend in Florida who’s a nurse-practitioner who’s been threatened many times and a bomb at their clinic. Let’s hope the government never NEVER forbids legal abortions, and that they help protect those who help women manage their own futures.
