dear Senator John McCain,

Fuck You.

no, really.

i say this w/ all the love and respect a veteran can say to someone who rationalizes fighting an update to the current GI Bill.  i know what the current GI Bill provides, Senator, and i can assure you that not only is it not enough to ever encourage people to get out of the military, but it is a scary thing to think that that is all the money you will have to get your education once you get out.  it is far more beneficial to stay in and try to take classes for free while on active duty.  the high cost of tuition in many states is not even close to covered by the amount allowed per term, and as tuition rises the current benefit stays at a flat rate.

and the current policies regarding active duty tuition assistance, explained by the high dollar of your darling Mr. Bush’s war, are limiting people more and more, making it difficult for many reasons for them to qualify for any kind of assistance at all.  troops are being told that if they want an education they should use their GI Bill while still on active duty.  i am sure i don’t have to tell you how that decreases your total benefits and essentially rips off anyone who has to use that option.

but it’s all for the good of the war, right?

and while we are talking about giving incentives for people to get out after one enlistment, i will remind you of the drive of the military branches to downsize.  that’s right, Senator, the military is downsizing and pushing people out the door faster than you can say “Aye aye, sir”.  the Navy alone is looking to trim about 20% from it’s current numbers.  so what is w/ all the fear talk about people getting out?

the Webb Bill is a first and tiny step toward thanking the people who are currently wasting their lives away in the name of your sacred war.  that you don’t think that anyone who has served one enlistment isn’t deserving of a GI Bill shows both that you really are out of touch w/ the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines of today’s military and that you don’t give a flying fuck about them at all.

as long as it is for the good of the war, right, Senator?

hope you had a fantastic Memorial Day, Senator, shipmate.

warmest regards,

Ouyang Dan

Just a thought. The military routinely recruits in high poverty areas. Of course they don’t want these people to have access to higher education. Actually shrinking the number of the poor is not the goal of the ruling elite. I mean who would they exploit for cheap labor otherwise? I think that this is disgusting.

My neighborhood is prime recruiting ground- complete with recruiting offices for everyone but the air force.

Huhmmm. My neighborhood also is poor and black.

    Coincidence- I think not.

between this bang up stance of his and the exciting letter from ADM Mullen last week, i would say that the government is ready to fuck troops and vets all around.

hey, rethugs and military PtB, you’re welcome for the service you pricks.

yes Dusty, sadly i think that is where we are going.

and i think that is going to lead us to Korea, again.

don’t ask how that thought train progressed…it just did.

    it is economic manipulation.

Yeah, why would McCain give benefits to people he only views as pawns? It’s really sickening. My ex is an air force officer and I used to feel guilty and get soooo pissed about the way enlisted are just hammered with all the work and the shittiest pay ever. While the officers, and former officers, decide that one-time enlisters don’t deserve the benefit of education. Grrrr.

Is it starting to feel like the French Revolution to anyone else around here?? I say we storm the Bastilles.

Yes Dan, a hearty “Fuck You Very Much” to that tool.

And this is coming from a guy who’s trying to make nice with anyone who will entertain a different perspective.

Great post, and diggin’ the comment thread.
