Disaster in the Aloha State

I remember right around my birthday this past year (for those of you keeping track, I am an April born Aries) I received several frantic phone calls from concerned friends and family asking if we were all OK from our “volcano eruption”.  I was a little confused.  I remember looking up at the sky.  We were on the Windward side of the Island, on our way to Kailua when my friend Suzanne called me.  She said it was all over the radio that a volcano in Hawai’i had erupted.  Of course it didn’t surprise me that something could happen here and we would be the last to know.  If any of you remember the earthquake that hit Hilo in 2006 (that’s “The Big Island” or Hawai’i) then you might not be surprised to find out that it was quite a bit of time b/f any of us on O’ahu knew WTP had happened.  I was getting calls from the mainland from friends and family asking if we were OK after the quake long before the news had reported anything.   Continue reading ‘Disaster in the Aloha State’

Thank-you, Tobes

For passing this along to me.*

*To all my feminist brothers and feminist ally brothers, you should already know that I do not blame every man, and that this is in no way trying to say “fuck you, men!”.  Perhaps we should all examine ourselves and try to see if we are perpetuating the problem, or standing in solidarity.

Here’s A Trailer For You!

Now, I came into comic book character nerdom late in life, having no money for nor access to comics while growing up.  I am trying to catch up.  So, to the lifers, what do you make of this?  I feel it is full of win.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog!

This might be the best thing I have watched in a long time.

You can watch it now on Hulu.  It is full of win!

Thanks for whatshername for telling me about Hulu.  I swear I not only live on a rock but some days I live under one too!

You can also check out the Dr. Horrible website for the story.

*Update w/ commentary

After reading the discussion from Holly’s post at Feministe, and not being able to comment at whatshername’s place, I opted to dissect it right here.

DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET!!!1! Continue reading ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog!’

Girl Crushes

No surprises here!

It is no secret that I love love love Katherine Heigl!  Despite the crap writing we saw this last season (hey, itunes, I would still like my money back, BTW) on Grey’s “Izzy” is my favorite character, and she has totally made all of the movies in which I have seen her (and I have it on good authority I still need to watch Roswell).  Her quirky funny sense of humor comes out in all of her roles, and I do believe she is drop dead gorgeous (but felt her too obvious for my Meme yesterday). Wednesday Whedon Moment

The First Rule of Flying by Malcom Reynolds.

A touching moment.  Personally, I love that he calls her “Little Albatross”.

I am also going to look into “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog” b/c it seems like my cup o tea.

And, had I known whatshername would be looking at all of them last week…

A Meme

From Some Watery Tart I have a Meme of the sort that I don’t normally do, but since I do Ear Candy, I suppose the occasional Eye Candy isn’t uncalled for.  This is actually a combination of that meme and a convo I was having w/ Reader K8 in comments earlier RE the “list” from Friends.  So, judge me if you want to, but I felt inclined to answer that all important question of what “famous people would you want listed in the contract that your significant other had to forgive you if, you know, you just happened to meet them and you just happened to hit it off and they just happened to express interest in some hot, shallow monkey sex?”.  FTR, I don’t think anyone on this list could make me as happy as The Guy does (insert obligatory *awwwww* here).  So, w/ that in mind, and no further ado:

(In no real particular order) Continue reading ‘A Meme’

An Action Item

I have been shamelessly negligent in blogging about the LaVena Johnson story.  I have read about it all over Bloggerdom, most frequently from Philip Barron at Shakesville.  Recently, there was notable coverage from many other significant blogs, including a post by Kate Harding up at BroadsheetFeministing, The Curvature, and What About Our Daughters.  There has been a recent story on Buzz Flash.  The coverage is finally extensive, and I think it is more than due after three years.

19 year old LaVena Johnson is said (by military officials) to have committed suicide in 2005, one day after she excitedly told her family that she was finally coming home from Iraq.  The “facts” in this story just do not add up.  The rumors of her location at the time she was found dead don’t match official stories, the details of her wounds do not make sense.  Either this is the biggest clusterfucktastrophe of an investigation ever or someone is going to a lot of effort to cover up what really happened to PFC Johnson.

There is an online petition circulating w/ a goal of 3,000 signatures.  I urge you to take two minutes to sign it, to help her family find the truth and to help bring her justice.

In Response

to Renee’s post about the upcoming remake of the Cult Classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, and her question of who should play the new Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the Guy and I rented it last night, b/c it occurred to me that my prudishness in High School and Early in my 20’s kept me from seeing it.  I had a chance to see it performed live when I was first in college, but I don’t remember where or when, b/c I was appalled that someone would have asked me to see it.

Wow did I miss out.

I just have to say, my how people change.  I loved it.  That might be the most amazing thing I have seen Tim Curry do.  And I like Tim Curry (his accent is sooooo cute).  Besides, I have to give kudos to anyone who can walk in heels like that, let alone dance and run!

Having a closed mind and being a pearl clutcher is only going to cause you to miss out on things that are awesome and fun.
