From the Moderation Queue…

comes this little gem on this post:

Juanita *is* fat. She’s so fat, she’s at risk for diabetes and heart problems. Every time I see her in an episode I want to cry, because a child this fat will have a short life. We should be praising Desperate Housewives for making this a part of the show instead of not talking about the widespread childhood obesity epidemic in America.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Ms. Elizabeth Buckwalter knows everything in creation, as she pretends to, and that, sure, she is correct in her assholish assertion about De La Garza’s health.

This heartless and ignorant statement would still not be OK, not by a long fucking shot.  The young actress who plays Juanita Solis is still a human being, and a child for fuck’s sake.  No where on any plane is it acceptable to be so cruel to a child.  Ever.  Not unless you want to set her up for a lifetime of health problems b/c of your psychological abuse, which she is already suffering from being the butt of nasty jokes on the show.

If, in fact, Ms. Buckwalter had read my post she would have noticed that I never argued that Madison De La Garza wasn’t fat.  I argued that she is a person who shouldn’t be subjected to being the butt of cruel and heartless jokes by women who supposedly fit into a ridiculous beauty standard that is unattainable by most people.  I reason that it is never acceptable to treat a child in such a cruel manner, even if a concern troll like Ms. Buckwalter thinks that she is doing the world justice by pointing out that this actress is ZOMG PART OF THE CHILDHOOD OBESITY EPIDEMIC!!!1! (which is made up, BTW)

We also don’t know why some people are fat and others are less than.  There are a number of factors that play into a person’s body and weight.  Being a fat person does not mean you are going to live a shorter life.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to be riddled w/ diseases your whole life, regardless of what the common belief among the laymen masses may be.

The truth is that the BMI is bullshit.  The visual perception of someone is no indicator of their internal health.  What we deems as acceptable size for women and girls doesn’t mean that it will be the epitome of good health.  Unless you are this girl’s doctor, holding in your hand proof to show us that she is in fact in danger, (which would mean that you are violating your patient’s privilege and are now a criminal), then you need to STFU, b/c you have no idea what the state of her health is.  Playing into mean and hateful language will mark a child’s self esteem, and set them up for a future of eating disorders and other unhealthy behavior so that they can attempt to fit into your ridiculous ideal of what they should look like.  Shaming a person into dieting will likely only cause them to hurt themselves, b/c diets don’t work, and usually cause more health problems than being fat anyway.  To quote Kate Harding:

in any case, shaming teh fatties for being “unhealthy” doesn’t fucking help. If shame made people thin, there wouldn’t be a fat person in this country, trust me. I wish I could remember who said this, ’cause it’s one of my favorite quotes of all time: “You cannot hate people for their own good.

So, Ms. Elizabeth Buckwalter, b/f you go spouting off insensitive and ass hattish remarks on my blog, do me two favors.  1)  Read my fucking comment policy and see that you have violated it.  Perhaps you should have paid attention b/f you hit the publish button on the comments.  2)  Think about what the fuck you are saying and doing.  Your words are not helpful.  They are cruel and nasty and make you an asshole.  Don’t worry, you won’t be lonely, b/c there are lots of assholes out there just like you to keep you company at your Shame the Child meetings.  No where on any plane of existence will shaming a fat person help them or make them thin.  No where does your opinion make Madison De La Garza any less beautiful, nor does it make her any less human, and any less deserving of the respect we bestow upon the people who deem more worthy of it.

She is a person you self righteous moral high horse riding jerk.  A person w/ thoughts and feelings and dreams, and a talented actress as well.  She deserves the same respect that anyone else does.

Anyone else  want to have at this in comments?

The fat shaming has got to stop. I agree that is particularly bad when aimed at a child. Having had to deal with it a lot recently I know first hand how painful it can be.
