Ya Know What’s Not Funny?

(trigger warning for implied violence against women)

Violence against women.  Even if you think it is just a fucking prank at Halloween.

Halloween is not a free pass for douche baggery.  There are lots of great ways to decorate your lawn w/o being a complete douche nozzle who tries to get a few chuckles out of violence against women.  That alone is enough to piss me right the fuck off, but haven’t we learned that fucking lynching isn’t OK to joke about in our day and time?  Take your “art”, Mr. Douch Nozzle of the day and go fuck yourself.

FYI, the McCain in flames bit, also not funny.

I don’t have to agree w/ someone’s politics to defend them against shit that is fucked up.

That’s how feminism works.

Ya Know What’s Not Funny?

Violence against women.

And I know that there are tons of people out there who think that I give people associated w/ Joss Whedon a free pass on things.  This isn’t true.  I don’t really claim that all the people who work w/ Whedon are as feminist as Whedon, although it certainly disappoints me (remember my disappointment in finding that SMGP when she said feminism was an icky word).

PG Porn, created by the Gunn brothers (James has worked w/ Whedon in the past, recently on Dr. Horrible, IIRC, and Sean is of Gilmore Girls fame, as in “Naked Kirk”) is a new hit on Spike TV.  The premise (which sounded amusing to me when I first read about it) is to take scripts from porn and act it out, minus the sex and nudity.  It involves actors and porn stars alike.  It really did sound like a good idea, until I just watched the first one.

Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger

Tip of the Hat:

via

To Joe Biden, for publicly and proudly proclaiming that Proposition 8 is a fucked up idea.  Well, he was a little less sailor like in his vernacular.

Biden, meanwhile, said during an appearance Monday on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that if he lived in California he would vote against a ballot measure that seeks to ban gay marriage. DeGeneres, who is gay and newly wed to actress Portia de Rossi, has urged Californians to reject Proposition 8.

“I think it’s regressive,” the Delaware senator said. “I think it’s unfair, and so I vote ‘no.’”

Even though Biden personally is against same sex marriage, he (and Obama), is all for equal rights for same sex partner.  Thanks, Joe, b/c that is encouraging.  More than you know. Continue reading ‘Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger’

The Importance of Being Juanita Solis

I mentioned a while ago that I have a very unfeminist guilty pleasure.  I have been watching Desperate Housewives since it’s beginning.  The series is highly problematic in many ways, and sometimes I find myself watching to pick it apart.

Some of the behavior of each of the principle characters is meant to be ironic.  They are almost caricatures of the traits they are meant to exploit.  Gabby’s selfishness, Bree’s creepy perfectionism, Lynette’s overbearingness are all meant to be so over the top that no one could possibly think these things are OK.  There is one thing though, new to this season, that has had me cringing at the pain from the vein in my forehead.

Gabby and her husband, Carlos, have two girls.  I couldn’t tell you the younger one’s name, b/c we are always hearing about the older Solis girl, Juanita.  Juanita is fat.  Juanita being fat is such an issue that we have yet to hear much about the other child that Gabby and Carlos have.  We are meant to believe that Juanita is only four, and there have been at least two story lines now around her weight and size, and what seems to be acceptable fat shaming.  There have been very few scenes involving the young girl portraying Juanita that have had nothing to do w/ her being fat.  The first time we see her, in last season’s finale, her face is covered in chocolate.  The next time we see her, Gabby is trying to cram her into a princess dress for a party, and is asking for a larger size, only to be told that they don’t make princess dresses for girls over seven (ha ha, get it, b/c she is too fat to be four!).  Gabby becomes concerned, and begins to concoct ways to trick Juanita into exercising, like making her chase the car home.  I can count on one hand the number of scenes where I haven’t seen Juanita w/ food or drink in her hand.  We are definitely supposed to know that Juanita is fat b/c she eats all the time and b/c her mother just “can’t say no”. I am an ally…

Today is National Coming Out Day.  I am reserving this space to state loud and proud my desire to be an ally to the LGBTQI community.  I wish to work along side them to fight for equality and to march along side them on that road.

As difficult as it was and scary as it was for me to come out to my friends and family as a Pagan and as a Progressive/Liberal I can not begin to imagine how difficult it is for someone to come out to their families as gay, lesbian, trans*, queer, or any other way that fits under the gamut of humanity.  I can not fathom the fear of rejection, abuse, persecution, or possible violent death that my dearly loved friends and family must have felt.  Every day in the news I read about the difficulties that they face just trying to exist.  I read about the violence they face.  I read about children cast from their homes and families by those who are supposed to love them but then decide that love comes w/ conditions.  I see friends and family who just want to be families w/ the people they love and can’t even visit each other in the hospital w/o lying.  I can not imagine how hard it must be.  But I can do my damnedest to make sure I stand beside them.

When Republicans and other fundamentalists talk about family values and protecting families they are never thinking about those families built of two moms, two dads, and every variety in between.  Somehow a family can not exist outside of their narrow view and it shoves countless people into the margins.  ”Family” does not mean what they think it does…

And when these Republicans and fundamentalists push for laws to “preserve the sanctity of marriage”, or prevent homosexual couples or even single folk from adopting a child and use their religious views to infringe on the rights of some people to simply exist it hurts and I realize they don’t care about people.  Their god can not be the same one I used to worship, b/c that god would want them to love and accept people for who they are.

B/c this is what the fight for equality is about.  It is about people.  The march for human rights for the LGBTQI community isn’t about laws and party politics.  It isn’t about Prop 8 or marriage rights.  It isn’t about who’s right and who’s wrong.  It is about people’s lives.

These are people’s lives we are playing w/.  These are the lives of human beings who have the right to live just like any one else.  They have a right to exist in these spaces and have happiness and even heartaches just like any one else.  The fervor to deny them rights isn’t about religion or laws or the Bible or anything like that, it is about denying human beings the right to exist.  It is about saying “I’m better than you so I deserve to exist and you don’t”.  It’s about control.  Control of the lives different from your own.

And that is why I am an ally.  I believe that people have a right to exist.  They have a right to be here and love and have families if they wish to and to be left alone w/ their decisions if they don’t.  They deserve to be loved and not prayed over for healing of their “sins”.  They deserve to not be othered.

B/c these are people’s lives.

They deserve to be part of a “we” and not part of a “they”.

B/c we all deserve these things.

I am an ally.

Yay! Connecticut!

Photobucket

3 down, 47 to go!

And because it was ruled based on the State’s Constitution it can not be reviewed by the US Supreme Court. Current civil union laws in Connecticut failed to provide the equal protection that marriage gives couples.

The march for equality goes on…

When Sexism Hits Close to Home

I did not have a conventional childhood.  Hell, I don’t have a conventional family.  It wasn’t until I was well into my teens that I realized that not every child grows up next door to Grandma and Grandpa, w/ their aunties and uncles w/in walking distance.  My entire extended family lives right in the same 40 mile radius of beautiful Northern Michigan (and when I say Northern, I am not talking about Traverse City or anything on Lake Michigan, I mean actual above the bridge, bordering Canada, my home town being one of the twin cities, the other being in Ontario North.  Da UP, eh!).  I didn’t know that families don’t always work together, and that Friday nights were not always spent running lines while your uncles stripped nets for repair.  My family was not what McCain and Palin picture when they talk about “American Families”.  I spent a few years living w/ my grandparents, and a couple w/ an aunt and uncle while my mom went to school and corrections officer training.  But there is one thing that I can tell you my family has in common w/ every other family out there.

Sexism hurts them.

And a lot times we don’t even see it b/c it is so ingrained in the way our families run. Continue reading ‘When Sexism Hits Close to Home’

Ashley Judd — Full of Win

At least until her next movie comes out.  But wevs, she is on my “nice” list for today!

via Media Matters, and h/t to QCoFM:

With regard to women, who I think do make such an important constituency in this upcoming election, McCain has a zero record on voting against women’s privacy and reproductive health. Senator Obama has a 100 percent voting record for women’s privacy and reproductive health. And the only reason that McCain has a zero is organizations like Planned Parenthood couldn’t find a lower number. And a woman voting for McCain and Palin is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.

(emphasis all fucking mine)

Don’t be a chicken.

That’s right, I said it.

PS:  I will be serving pathetic anger bread w/ baked ziti tonight.

Pledge a Picket update

You may recall that I posted info about the protest going on outside the Honolulu Planned Parenthood clinic.  I emailed the director of the clinic to ask if there was any online info, and she emailed me this morning informing me that they had added a link and updated information.

You can go directly here to sponsor a picketer either w/ a per diem or a one time amount.  Like I said before, they will let the picketers know how much money they have raised while they protest.

Also, don’t forget you can donate to PP in Sarah Palin’s name as well.

Support a great cause and have little cheeky fun too!

Special thanks to Ms. O’keefe for getting back to me w/ this update.
