Yay! Connecticut!

Photobucket

3 down, 47 to go!

And because it was ruled based on the State’s Constitution it can not be reviewed by the US Supreme Court. Current civil union laws in Connecticut failed to provide the equal protection that marriage gives couples.

The march for equality goes on…

Hurricane Gustav Help Links

I am a little late on this.

There are several bloggers better than me out there w/ lots of information on how you can help people in need due to Hurricane Gustav on the heels of the Katrina Anniversary, and some information on the people living in the thick of it right now.

From them I have gathered that the best way to help right now is through INCITE.  Please know that any donation you can give right now could mean the world to someone in danger right now, even if it is five dollars.  There are numerous people who are powerless to help themselves right now, b/c financially speaking they are not able to evacuate.

Our thoughts and blessings go out to those affected by Hurricane Gustav, and especially to those still suffering from Hurricane Katrina.

Disaster in the Aloha State

I remember right around my birthday this past year (for those of you keeping track, I am an April born Aries) I received several frantic phone calls from concerned friends and family asking if we were all OK from our “volcano eruption”.  I was a little confused.  I remember looking up at the sky.  We were on the Windward side of the Island, on our way to Kailua when my friend Suzanne called me.  She said it was all over the radio that a volcano in Hawai’i had erupted.  Of course it didn’t surprise me that something could happen here and we would be the last to know.  If any of you remember the earthquake that hit Hilo in 2006 (that’s “The Big Island” or Hawai’i) then you might not be surprised to find out that it was quite a bit of time b/f any of us on O’ahu knew WTP had happened.  I was getting calls from the mainland from friends and family asking if we were OK after the quake long before the news had reported anything.   Continue reading ‘Disaster in the Aloha State’

An Action Item

I have been shamelessly negligent in blogging about the LaVena Johnson story.  I have read about it all over Bloggerdom, most frequently from Philip Barron at Shakesville.  Recently, there was notable coverage from many other significant blogs, including a post by Kate Harding up at BroadsheetFeministing, The Curvature, and What About Our Daughters.  There has been a recent story on Buzz Flash.  The coverage is finally extensive, and I think it is more than due after three years.

19 year old LaVena Johnson is said (by military officials) to have committed suicide in 2005, one day after she excitedly told her family that she was finally coming home from Iraq.  The “facts” in this story just do not add up.  The rumors of her location at the time she was found dead don’t match official stories, the details of her wounds do not make sense.  Either this is the biggest clusterfucktastrophe of an investigation ever or someone is going to a lot of effort to cover up what really happened to PFC Johnson.

There is an online petition circulating w/ a goal of 3,000 signatures.  I urge you to take two minutes to sign it, to help her family find the truth and to help bring her justice.

The Passing of a Great One

George Carlin, 71, died yesterday of heart failure.

What an incredibly great loss.

George Carlin was on my short list of people I would like to meet before I die, with Spalding Grey, the Dalai Lama and Alice Cooper. I have reasons for my desire to meet each one, and I have noticed the list of possibilities is growing shorter.

When I was younger and more naive I was appalled at the things that Carlin used to say in his shows. There was a time when I thought he was offensive. As I grew up in body and spirit and mind the things he would say in comedy began to poke at me and would actually make me think about the things I believed. To this day, I try to practice his wise words from one of my favorite stupid 80s movies of all time, “Be excellent to each other”.

His “Seven Words” act is one of the things he is most well known for among people who didn’t follow him that closely, and even got him a footnote in the legal history when the Supreme Court ruled that playing his act on a radio broadcast during hours when children could be listening was not OK.

I personally loved his pokes at religion. I have my reasons. I loved him in Dogma for a lot of the same reasons.

I will leave w/ this clip, that I have posted before, b/c aside from being amazingly hilarious, he also had a way w/ words that I found profound.

We will miss you, George. And I am sorry I never got the chance to finish my list.

the ones who should be asking

being former military i often reflect on the past four years.  it was a huge part of my life, a life in which the Kid has grown from infancy into childhood, in fact i am pretty sure that all of her memories are of our life in the military to present.  when i reflect on that part of my life i think about all of the great things, like the incredible education i received, the people i have met, and the amazing places i have and still do live.

i also think about the less savory things that were a part of that life. Continue reading ‘the ones who should be asking’

my Kid’s school rocks!

here is a quick video of the Kid’s school participating in Earth Day from KHNL News in Honolulu.  Sadly, i was working (what is up w/ work?  it gets in the way of all the fun stuff!), but at about :45 in you can see a quick glimpse of the Kid!

i can’t say enough how awesome this school is.  in addition to excellent academics, they teach social responsibility and character education!  this kind of thing just makes my heart swell.  it’s no wonder the Kid never wants to leave at the end of the day!
